Caregiver Tip #8: Hope for the future; recovery is possible.

“When a loved one develops a mental Illness, many falsely believe that the only path for the individual is one of immense struggle and diminished capacity across their life. I'm here to tell you that that is not what the research demonstrates. Let me be clear; recovery is the expectation, not the exception.

With proper treatment and self-care, most experiencing a mental health challenge will improve and live rewarding and productive lives. In fact, data suggest of those who are diagnosed with major clinical depression and receive proper care, approximately 80% will have significant improvement and recovery. That is a better recovery rate than most physical healthcare conditions. The key to effective recovery is managing it. What does that look like? Talk about the challenge, get help, follow treatment recommendations of those providing care, and institute self-care habits that work for you. Remember, recovery is the expectation, not the exception. There is great hope. When these principles are implemented, thriving is the aim, and it is indeed achievable.
