Collier opioid crisis: Overdose deaths drop as county fights addiction

The Naples Daily News reviewed overdose statistics and spoke with the Collier County sheriff, medical professionals and addiction specialists to answer a vital question: What does the opioid epidemic look like in Collier County today?

Numbers of overdose deaths remain at elevated levels that would have been shocking a decade ago. But in 2023, overdose deaths are on track to decrease for the first time since 2017 – a sign, perhaps, that the county’s social and medical institutions are catching up to the crisis.
