Guest opinion: Home Base Florida shines spotlight on Veterans' mental health crisis

Many of our Veterans return home with an “invisible” wound of service such as post-traumatic stress, depression and traumatic brain injury.

If untreated, these can lead to an increased risk of suicide and substance use. From the VA’s Annual Report September 2021, “Across the same 18 year period [2001-2019], the average number of Veteran suicides per day rose 4.5%, from 16.4 in 2001 to 17.2 in 2019.”

The report also shows that the suicide rate per 100,000 population of Veterans far exceeds that of the US adult population. Home Base has one mission: heal these invisible wounds of service through world-class clinical care, wellness, education and research.
